What this page cannot tell you

Whether an item is taxed at all, and at what rate, depends on the state: many exempt groceries or prescription drugs, some tax clothing differently, and special district taxes can apply. City rates change during the year. Use your state's official rate lookup for a specific address.

How to calculate sales tax

  1. Pick the state. The state rate fills in and the local rate starts at the state's average local rate.
  2. Enter your local rate. Your city and county's combined rate, from your state revenue department or a receipt.
  3. Enter the price. Or the total paid, if you want to take the tax out.
  4. Read tax and total. Plus the state's rates from the 2026 table.

Where the rates come from

State rates, population-weighted average local rates and the highest local rate in each state are from the Tax Foundation's 2026 midyear table (rates as of July 1, 2026). The average combined rate is the state rate plus the average local rate.

No free, complete nationwide dataset of city rates exists, so the page asks for your local rate and starts it at the state's average. Your state revenue department's address lookup gives the exact combined rate for a location.

Limits: whether an item is taxable at all depends on the state — groceries, prescription drugs and clothing are often treated differently — and special districts can add tax. Rates change during the year. Use this for estimates, not for filing a sales tax return.
