How the file is read
The file is read in your browser according to the OGC KML 2.2 standard: Placemarks with Point, LineString, Polygon and MultiGeometry, with their names, descriptions and ExtendedData. Nothing is uploaded.
Styles, icons, images, network links, ground overlays and 3D models are not drawn. KMZ is a zipped KML: rename it to .zip, open it and use the doc.kml inside.
Lengths are geodesics on WGS84 and areas are ellipsoidal.
Frequently asked questions
Can it open KMZ?
Not directly — unzip it first (rename .kmz to .zip) and open the doc.kml inside.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It is read in your browser.
Why are my icons and colours missing?
Styles are not drawn; the shapes and data are.
How large a file can it open?
Up to 50 MB, though very large files can be slow.
Can I convert KML to GPX?
Yes — paths become tracks and placemarks become waypoints.
