What this page cannot tell you

A percentage change is measured against the starting value, so going up 50% and then down 50% does not return to the start. Percentage points (a change from 5% to 7% is 2 points) are different from percent change (that is a 40% increase).

Method: (new − original) ÷ |original| × 100. Undefined when the original is 0. Calculated in your browser.

How to calculate a percentage increase

  1. Pick the calculation. Percent change, add or subtract a percent, or original before a percent.
  2. Enter the values. The original and new values, or a value and a percentage.
  3. Read the result. The percentage, the difference and the ratio.

How the percentages are worked out

Percentage change = (new − original) ÷ |original| × 100. A positive result is an increase, a negative one a decrease.

Adding p%: value × (1 + p ÷ 100). Subtracting p%: value × (1 − p ÷ 100). The original before a change: new ÷ (1 ± p ÷ 100) — not the new value minus the same percentage.

Limits: a change from 0 has no percentage. Percentage points (5% to 7%) are different from percent change (a 40% increase).
