What this page cannot tell you

Diagonal and herringbone layouts, many doorways, closets and stairs all use more than a straight lay. Underlayment, transitions, trim and stair nosing are separate purchases. The waste allowance is your own figure; manufacturers' installation guides sometimes state one for their product.

Method: area × (1 + allowance) ÷ sq ft per box, rounded up = boxes; planks = area with allowance ÷ (length × width ÷ 144). Plain arithmetic in your browser.

How to calculate flooring

  1. Measure the floor. Room length × width, or the total of several rooms.
  2. Set a waste allowance. Your own percentage for cuts.
  3. Enter sq ft per box. From the carton label.
  4. Read boxes. Plus planks and cost if you enter them.
